The wind quintet Arktinen Hysteria has been one of the top Finnish chamber music ensembles for over twenty years. At the Oulu Music Festival, the ensemble will present a captivating program of French and American music in their concert, completed with two Finnish premieres.
The concert begins with La cheminée du roi René, composed by Darius Milhaud in 1939, one of the classic works of wind quintet literature, continued by the charming, four-minute Pastorale is the composer's late work, written by Amy Beach in 1941. After these, Arctic Hysteria will perform Summer Music, composed by Samuel Barber in 1956, which is described as ranging from a lyrical and lazy mood to an energetic and counter-punctual texture. The concert culminates in two interesting and very different premieres: a new work for wind quintet by the Canadian-Finnish composer Matthew Whittall and the 1st Wind Quintet by Arttu Takalo, who is also known as a jazz musician.
